Book Review:
This is an introduction to the world of cinema, written by Christopher Kenworthy, a film critic and correspondent for 30 years. It takes readers on a tour from Hollywood to Bollywood, traveling through the history of the moving image from the earliest optical toys (zoetrope, phenakistoscope) to IMAX cinema. The book covers cartoons and animation (Walt Disney), special effects (the first special effects movie, ''A Trip to the Moon''), stunts, and computer animation (Pixar). The final section explores the life cycle of a movie, going behind the scenes to meet the people who make it happen: directors, producers, actors, screenwriters, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, and costume designers. It includes curriculum vitae boxes on stars, glossaries of technical terms, and a list of great names in cinema. The consultant is Colin Harding of the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television. This is a great introduction for young readers.
