Freddy Martinez and his friend Cara think they're tough. They're not afraid of anything. But their courage is put to the ultimate test when they discover a hidden room in Freddy's basement. Inside, they find an old bottle labeled ''Vampire Breath.'' Curiosity gets the better of them, and they open it. Big mistake. Releasing a mysterious gas, they soon find themselves face-to-face with a real, live (or undead) vampire who is very, very thirsty. Now, Freddy and Cara must use all their wits to survive the night and avoid becoming the vampire's next meal.

This book is a perfect example of why Goosebumps became a global phenomenon. Stine masterfully builds suspense from the very first page. The basement setting is perfectly creepy, and the vampire is a memorable and genuinely threatening villain. The plot is fast-paced, the dialogue is snappy, and the ending is classic Stine: satisfying, scary, and leaving just a hint of lingering dread.
