Book Review:
''The Chase'' is a standout Commando issue that cleverly subverts the typical ''chase'' narrative by extending it across decades and transforming enemies into uneasy allies. This two-act structure gives the story a satisfying depth rarely found in such compact formats.
The first act delivers the classic Commando thrill: a tense, life-or-death pursuit between a British officer and his German counterpart during WWII. The twist comes in the second act, set 15 years later, where these former foes are forced to collaborate to track down a Nazi war criminal. This shift elevates the story from simple wartime action to a more nuanced tale about the lingering shadows of war, justice, and the possibility of reconciliation.
The character dynamics are the heart of the story. Seeing the ingrained hostility between the two men gradually give way to a grudging respect and shared purpose is compelling. The black-and-white art effectively conveys the urgency of both chases—across rocky wartime terrain and through the shadowy post-war underworld.
This issue is a perfect example of how the Commando series can use its standard formula to tell more sophisticated stories. It's not just about who wins the battle, but about how the past defines and sometimes redeems the present.
