Book Review:
Jodi Picoult has built a career on taking complex, controversial issues and turning them into deeply human stories. ''House Rules'' is a prime example of her gift. It's a novel that works on multiple levels—as a gripping mystery, as a family drama, as a exploration of neurodiversity, and as a meditation on justice and truth.

The novel centers on Jacob Hunt, an eighteen-year-old with Asperger's syndrome. Jacob is brilliant, particularly in the area of forensic science. He watches crime shows obsessively, studies crime scene investigation techniques, and lectures his family on proper evidence collection. He's also socially isolated, unable to read facial expressions or understand social cues, rigid in his routines, and prone to meltdowns when those routines are disrupted.

When Jacob's social skills tutor is found dead, the police immediately focus on him. His obsession with crime scenes, his unusual behavior, his difficulty explaining his whereabouts—all of these become evidence against him. The novel follows the investigation, the arrest, and the trial, alternating between the perspectives of Jacob, his mother Emma, his younger brother Theo, and the police detective on the case.

What makes ''House Rules'' so powerful is Picoult's ability to get inside each character's head. Jacob's chapters are particularly remarkable—they give readers access to his way of thinking, his struggles to navigate a world that doesn't make sense to him, his literal interpretations of language, his sensory sensitivities, his desperate desire to be understood. We see how his behavior, innocent in intent, can be misinterpreted by those who don't understand Asperger's.

Emma's chapters explore the exhaustion and love of parenting a child with special needs, the guilt of sometimes wishing things were easier, the fierce protectiveness that overrides everything. Theo's chapters reveal the experience of the ''neurotypical'' sibling—the one who gets less attention, who has to be the ''normal'' one, who resents his brother even as he loves him.

The mystery itself is well-constructed, with enough twists to keep readers guessing. But the novel's real power lies in its questions: What is justice for someone who processes the world differently? How does the legal system fail those who don't conform to neurotypical expectations? How well do any of us truly know those we love?

The Sunday Express calls it ''an emotional rollercoaster'' and ''a real page-turner with a strong whodunnit element.'' Stylist praises ''Picoult's impressive ability to get inside her characters' heads'' as ''astounding.'' Both are right.

If you're new to Jodi Picoult, ''House Rules'' is an excellent place to start. If you're already a fan, it won't disappoint. It's a novel that will make you think, make you feel, and maybe even change how you see the world. Highly recommended.
