''The Godmother'' by Amanda Brookfield is a heartfelt and intelligent novel about a woman's search for love, independence, and meaning in midlife. Rachel Elliot is single and attractive, a director of a successful advertising firm with a handsome lover, several close friends, and a clutch of young godchildren. But as her fortieth birthday approaches, so does a sneaking sense of futility.

With typical resolution, Rachel decides that the answer to this new problem is to have a child of her own. Used to getting what she wants, she expects to achieve this aim in the same easy manner in which all her other life ambitions have been realized. But Rachel's quest proves fraught with unexpected problems. Being independent can be isolating, she discovers, especially for someone so skilled at keeping her emotions to herself.

Brookfield's writing is warm, insightful, and deeply moving. This is a story that speaks to the heart as well as the head. If you enjoy contemporary women's fiction, character-driven drama, or stories about midlife and motherhood, The Godmother is a must-read. Highly recommended!
