Book Review:
Michael Connelly has written some of the best crime fiction of the past three decades, but with ''The Lincoln Lawyer,'' he may have outdone himself. This is a novel that fires on all cylinders—a brilliantly plotted legal thriller with a protagonist so compelling that readers demanded more.
Mickey Haller is not your typical hero. He's a criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back seat of his Lincoln Town Car, driven by a succession of drivers (often former clients). He represents the dregs of Los Angeles: bikers, con artists, drunk drivers, drug dealers. He's not particularly idealistic; he's a pragmatist who knows the system and works it.
But when Louis Roulet, a wealthy real estate agent from Beverly Hills, is arrested for brutally beating a woman, Haller gets the kind of case he's been waiting for. Roulet is handsome, charming, and insistent on his innocence. He can pay. And for once, Haller might be defending a client who actually didn't do it.
But as Haller digs into the case, things start to unravel. The victim has a past. The evidence doesn't quite add up. Roulet's story has holes. And Haller begins to suspect that he's not defending an innocent man but being manipulated by a master manipulator. The case becomes a nightmare of moral ambiguity, where the line between guilt and innocence blurs, and where the defense attorney finds himself in more danger than his client.
Connelly's plotting is masterful. The novel twists and turns, with revelations that are surprising yet earned. The legal details are authentic—Connelly clearly knows his stuff. The Los Angeles setting is vividly rendered, from the courthouses to the seedy neighborhoods to the Beverly Hills mansions.
But what makes the novel truly special is Haller himself. He's a complex character: cynical but not corrupt, ambitious but not ruthless, compromised but still searching for justice. He's the kind of lawyer you'd want if you were in trouble, even if you're not sure you trust him.
The critical response has been extraordinary. USA Today calls it ''one of the best novels he has written—if not the best.'' Stephen King says: ''Each book is better than the last. And this one is – pardon me – a real Cadillac.'' The Sunday Telegraph praises Connelly as ''one of the very best writers working today in any genre.''
''The Lincoln Lawyer'' is essential reading for crime fiction fans. It's a novel that will keep you up late, turning pages, desperate to know what happens next. And it introduces a character you'll want to follow through the rest of the series. Highly recommended.
