Book Review:
Michael Connelly's ''The Wrong Side of Goodbye'' proves once again why Harry Bosch is one of the most enduring and beloved characters in crime fiction. Now retired from the LAPD, Bosch works as a private investigator and a volunteer detective for the small city of San Fernando. The novel masterfully juggles two cases.
The first comes from Whitney Vance, an aging, reclusive billionaire who hires Bosch to find out what happened to the love of his life—a woman who disappeared after revealing she was pregnant decades ago. Did she have the baby? And if so, what happened to the child? The second case involves a series of sexual assaults in San Fernando, and Bosch is tasked with hunting down the predator before he strikes again.
Connelly's writing is as sharp and compelling as ever. Bosch is a complex, principled, and deeply human hero. His methodical investigative work is a pleasure to follow. The historical mystery of Vance's lost love is poignant and personal, while the San Fernando case provides urgent, present-day suspense. The two threads are woven together seamlessly, and the novel builds toward a satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion.
''The Wrong Side of Goodbye'' is a must-read for long-time Bosch fans and a perfect entry point for new readers. It's a powerful reminder of why Michael Connelly is considered a master of the genre. Lee Child calls him ''a superb natural storyteller,'' and this novel is ample proof of that.
