Book Review:
Nicholas Sparks has built a career on crafting deeply emotional love stories, and ''True Believer'' is a fine example of his gifts. It's a novel that asks a fundamental question: Can the mysteries of the human heart ever be unraveled?
The protagonist is Jeremy Marsh, a science journalist who has made his name debunking supernatural phenomena. He's a skeptic, a rationalist, a man who trusts only what can be proven. When he receives an assignment to investigate mysterious blue lights in a cemetery in the small town of Boone Creek, North Carolina, he expects to find a natural explanation and write another debunking piece.
Instead, he finds Lexie Darnell.
Lexie is the town librarian—beautiful, independent, and deeply rooted in the community. She's also the granddaughter of the woman who first saw the lights decades ago. As Jeremy and Lexie work together to uncover the truth, they're drawn to each other in ways that challenge everything Jeremy believes.
Sparks's prose is warm and accessible, perfect for the genre. He creates characters that readers care about, situations that feel real, and emotions that resonate. Jeremy's journey from skepticism to openness is handled with subtlety; he doesn't suddenly abandon reason but slowly realizes that reason has limits. Lexie is a wonderful creation—strong, vulnerable, and deeply human.
The small-town setting is beautifully evoked. Boone Creek feels like a real place, with its own history, its own characters, its own rhythms. Sparks captures the sense of community, the way everyone knows everyone, the comfort and claustrophobia of small-town life.
The novel also has a supernatural element—the mysterious lights—that adds depth without overwhelming the romance. The lights are never fully explained, and that's the point. Some things, Sparks suggests, are meant to remain mysterious.
Fans of Sparks will find everything they love here: intense romance, emotional depth, beautiful settings, and a story that will make them laugh and cry. The Daily Mail calls his work ''achingly moving... will have you weeping for the joy and tragedy of it all.'' That's exactly right.
''True Believer'' is the first book in a two-part series; the sequel, ''At First Sight,'' continues Jeremy and Lexie's story. For Sparks fans, it's essential reading. For newcomers, it's a wonderful introduction to his work.
Highly recommended for anyone who believes in the power of love.
