Book Review:
''Twelfth Night'' is, for my money, Shakespeare's perfect comedy. It has everything: a beautiful love story, hilarious slapstick, unforgettable characters, and some of the most exquisite poetry he ever wrote. At its heart is Viola, one of his greatest heroines. Shipwrecked and disguised as a man, she navigates a world of complicated love with wit and grace. The love triangle—Viola loves Orsino, Orsino loves Olivia, and Olivia loves Viola (as Cesario)—is both funny and moving. And then there's the subplot: Sir Toby Belch, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and Maria plotting against the pompous steward Malvolio. The scene where Malvolio is tricked into wearing yellow stockings and cross-garters is pure comic genius. It's a play about the madness of love, the pain of loss, and the joy of finding yourself again. This Cambridge edition is excellent, with great notes and a fantastic introduction. A must-read.
