Book Review:
''Woman and Empire: Representations in the Writings of British India (1858–1900)'' by Indrani Sen is a groundbreaking and comprehensive scholarly work that examines the representation of women in the literature of British India during the late colonial period. This book offers a detailed and nuanced analysis of how gender, race, and empire intersected in the writings of both British and Indian authors.

Sen, a Reader at the University of Delhi, provides a rich and insightful exploration of the gendered literary history of colonialism. As Antoinette Burton writes: ''Sen's book offers perhaps the most comprehensive account to date of how and why the gendered literary history of colonialism must be understood.'' Nalini Iyer adds: ''Woman and Empire proves that the topic [of the memsahib and colonial discourse] is not exhausted, and she opens up new avenues of discussion.''

This is an essential read for scholars and students of colonial history, postcolonial studies, women's studies, and literary criticism. Highly recommended for its depth, scholarship, and important contribution to the field.
