Book Review:
Jodi Picoult has made a career out of taking impossible moral dilemmas and turning them into compulsively readable novels. ''Change of Heart'' might be her most ambitious yet—a story that asks questions about justice, forgiveness, faith, and the nature of miracles, without offering easy answers.

The setup is classic Picoult: Shay Bourne is on death row, convicted of murdering a police officer and the young daughter of June Nealon. Eleven years later, as his execution approaches, he makes a bizarre request: he wants to donate his heart to June's surviving daughter, Claire, who is dying and in desperate need of a transplant.

For June, the offer is unthinkable. Shay destroyed her family. He killed her husband and her daughter. How can she accept his heart—literally and metaphorically—into her life? But refusing means watching her only remaining child die.

The novel unfolds through multiple perspectives: June, still consumed by grief and rage; Claire, who doesn't know the full truth about the man whose heart might save her; Shay himself, whose past is slowly revealed; Father Michael, a Catholic priest who becomes Shay's spiritual advisor and begins to wonder if there's more to this condemned man than anyone knows; and Maggie, Shay's lawyer, who must navigate the legal complexities of his unprecedented request.

Picoult's genius is in her ability to make every perspective feel valid. We understand June's hatred, her refusal to forgive. We also come to see Shay as more than his worst act—a man who has changed, who seeks redemption, who may even be something more than human. Father Michael's journey from skepticism to belief is rendered with subtlety and depth.

The legal and ethical questions are fascinating: Can a condemned man donate organs? Does the state have the right to take a life that could save another? What does it mean to forgive the unforgivable? Picoult doesn't preach; she presents the arguments and lets readers wrestle with them.

The religious dimension adds another layer. Shay's request is framed in terms that evoke Christ—he wants to give his heart to save a child. Father Michael begins to see parallels that disturb him. Is Shay a murderer seeking redemption, or something more? The novel leaves the question open, trusting readers to draw their own conclusions.

The Sunday Express calls it ''an edge-of-your-seat thriller'' that keeps you guessing to the end. The Daily Express describes it as ''an involving page-turning mixture of emotional upheaval and reasoned argument.''

''Change of Heart'' is vintage Picoult—a novel that will make you think, make you feel, and leave you debating its questions long after you've finished reading. If you're a fan of her work, you won't be disappointed. If you're new to her, this is an excellent place to start.

Just be prepared: Picoult doesn't do easy answers. The ending will stay with you, challenging you to decide what you believe about justice, forgiveness, and the possibility of change.
