Vengeance on Varos is a classic example of the darker, more cynical tone of the Sixth Doctor's era. Originally broadcast in 1985, this story by Philip Martin has been novelized by the author himself, offering fans a chance to revisit one of the most memorable and controversial serials from the Colin Baker years.

The story takes the Doctor and his American companion, Peri, to the desolate planet of Varos. They are searching for Zeiton-7, a precious mineral needed for TARDIS repairs, but they quickly find themselves trapped in a nightmarish society. Varos is a former prison colony where the descendants of the guards and prisoners are locked in a brutal cycle. To keep the populace pacified and entertained, the government broadcasts live feeds of torture and execution from the Punishment Dome. The Doctor and Peri are thrown into this deadly reality TV show, forced to navigate traps and fight for their lives while the audience votes on their fate.

Martin's novel is a sharp satire on media, voyeurism, and the desensitization of violence. The world-building is strong, creating a vividly unpleasant and oppressive atmosphere. The Sixth Doctor is portrayed in full form—arrogant, brilliant, and deeply compassionate beneath the bluster. Peri is given a more active role than in some of her televised adventures, and the villains, particularly the sadistic chief torturer, are memorably grotesque.

While the novel stays faithful to the original serial, it also benefits from the expanded format, allowing for more depth in character motivation and a clearer exploration of its themes. For fans of Doctor Who, particularly those interested in the show's history, Vengeance on Varos is a fascinating and entertaining read. It's a dark, thought-provoking adventure that holds a mirror up to our own obsession with spectacle and suffering.
