Book Review:
''Destination Moon'' is the sixteenth adventure in the Tintin series, first published in 1950. This book, together with its sequel ''Explorers on the Moon,'' represents Hergé's ambitious foray into science fiction – written years before humans actually landed on the Moon.
The story begins when Tintin receives a mysterious message from Professor Calculus, who has been secretly working in the fictional country of Syldavia. It turns out that Calculus is leading a top-secret project to build a nuclear-powered rocket capable of carrying humans to the Moon. Tintin and Captain Haddock join him at the heavily guarded Sprodj Atomic Research Centre.
What makes this book extraordinary is Hergé's commitment to scientific realism. He consulted with real scientists to ensure the rocket's design, launch procedures, and space travel challenges were as accurate as possible. The book details the construction of the rocket, the rigorous training of the crew, and the tension of the countdown. Hergé's artwork is meticulous – every dial, pipe, and control panel is drawn with precision. A brilliant, thoughtful, and exciting read.
